Bob Christie. 2017, . Arizona Legislation Targets Lawbreaking Universities, Proposes Ethnic Studies Ban. NBC, Available, http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/Arizona-Lawmaker-Targets-Lawbreaking-Universities-and-Colleges-410679135.html3 years ago I would have said that this legislation had no way of passing. Today I am not sure. The online alternative right attack against "liberal" academics has been escalating at an alarming rate. For example, ZeroHedge has been inciting rage against said liberal academics with increasing numbers of stories.
A new proposal would penalize colleges and universities that violate state law will be penalized with the loss of 10 percent of state funding….
[ Rep. Bob Thorpe of Flagstaff] … is also proposing legislation, H.B. 2120, to expand a state ban on ethnic studies programs in K-12 schools to colleges and universities. Violations also come with a 10 percent funding penalty.
I expect that soon there will be vicious acts of violence targeted at leftwing academics who attract the ire of the alt right by rejecting efforts to limit their speech and inquiry through the requirements of newspeak.
As I've written before at this blog, I always envisioned our dystopic future in terms of Huxley's Brave New World wherein resistance had been scientifically engineered out of the society.
Orwell's 1984 seemed too crudely authoritarian when contrasted with the subtleties of Huxley's Brave New World.
(for an interesting but brief discussion of these competing views of power see https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/01/huxley-to-orwell-my-dystopia-is-better-than-yours/508769/ ).
Yet, in my research on liberal societies, published in a 3 book series (first book here) - I discovered that liberal democracies are indeed vital feeding grounds for authoritarian leaders, particularly when charismatic and enabled by the legislative and judicial support of executive power.
Many observers have noted that power has become centralized in the US Executive branch of government. The conditions are right for further erosion of the conditions of possibility for liberal democracy, including free speech, due process, and the right to pursue happinesss.
