Earthquake Activity

Netc is showing radiation levels down in the region of the recent earthquake.

News media are beginning to report widely on the scale of devastation and the unusual nature of the recent earthquake activity:
Frequency of Kyushu quakes highest on record for Japan inland, coastal temblors. The Mainichi, April 17, 2016, http://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20160417/p2a/00m/0na/017000c

The frequency of the earthquakes that have hit Kumamoto Prefecture and surrounding areas is the highest ever observed in Japan for inland or coastal temblors, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said on April 17. Moreover, the JMA said the seismic activity is spreading not only northeast toward Oita Prefecture, but also southwest.

Significant earthquake activity not restricted to Japan:
Gonzalo Solano. Powerful earthquake kills dozens in Ecuador. The Washington Post, April 17, 2016, https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/powerful-74-magnitude-quake-hits-ecuadors-central-coast/2016/04/16/825ad702-0435-11e6-8bb1-f124a43f84dc_story.html?wpmm=1&wpisrc=nl_headlines

QUITO, Ecuador — The strongest earthquake to hit Ecuador in decades flattened buildings and buckled highways along the country’s Pacific coast, sending the Andean nation into a state of emergency. As rescue workers rushed in, officials said Sunday at least 77 people were killed, over 570 injured and the damage stretched for hundreds of miles to the capital and other major cities.  The magnitude-7.8 quake was centered on Ecuador’s sparsely populated fishing ports and tourist beaches, 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of Quito, the capital.
Volcanic activity also appears to be up.

  1. If we look at the last 20 thousand years what we call Western Civilization has enjoyed an exceptionally quiet time. No super earthquakes or volcanoes; no encounters with large space rocks; no ending of an ice age with subsequent floods devastating populated areas along new coast lines; and in the last few hundred years relatively few severe plagues. There have been droughts and famines. On the other hand the 20th century excelled in wars. The revelation of nuclear energy presents the opportunity to permanently end most organic life on the planet. Perhaps GMO's have the same though slower potential. So we have been lucky as a species for quite some time. It would be a normal earth event for a massive earth quake in the north west; for the mega volcano beneath Yellow Stone Park to erupt; for a world wide plague to occur; for another ice age to commence . . . We could say we have been living in a freak period of time with so few devastating events. Likewise it seems to me that the USA had a brief period of prosperity after WWII which then slipped away and which may not return. Tyranny is the usual form of governance. Poverty probably the usual condition of most peoples through out its long existence. Fortunately we are all the descendants of very successful persons. Whatever has happened on the earth going back hundreds of thousands of years, our ancestors managed to survive and procreate. Quite a remarkable achievement.

    1. yes, although we never before engineered the kind of infrastructural risks we now face with nuclear and other "risky" technologies.

Unfortunately, the response is DENIAL, as illustrated here

    2. There have been a large number of shallow and deep high magnitude earthquakes in Japan for centuries.
