WSJ: Duke to Close Troubled Nuclear Plant

Feb 6, 2013 by R. Smith page B2 Wall Street Journal

The article explains that Duke energy is going to close its Crystal River nuclear plant in Florida. It wants to replace it with a gas-fueled power plant.

The plant was closed because "parts of the concrete-and-steel building around the reactor were splitting apart."

Duke is intending to "mothball" the plant but will not actually demolish it for "up to 60 years"!

It has dedicated $600 million to decommissioning the plant but apparently it can defer most spending by "mothballing."

This strategy allows Duke to push off the true costs to future generations.

Nuke is NOT cost-effective, not carbon-friendly, not sustainable, not good for the environment and human health.

Period.
